The University of Indianapolis is a private coeducational university located in Indianapolis, which is the capital of the US state of Indiana, as well as the county seat of Marion County, having a population estimated at a number of more than 800 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which makes it the largest city in the state, the 14th largest city in USA, and the 3rd largest city in the Midwest, behind Chicago and Detroit.
The University of Indianapolis was chartered in 1902, but it did not began classes until 1905. The institution was formally known as Indiana Central University (ICU), between 1921 and 1975 being known as Indiana Central College (ICC), its current name being adopted in 1986. Today, the university has an enrollment of nearly 5000 students, and offers 9 associate's, 70 bachelor's, 22 master's, and 5 doctoral programs, through several schools and colleges, among which there are: the School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Nursing and School of Psychological Sciences.
The university's athletic teams are known as the Greyhounds, or Hounds for short, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including basketball, softball, track & field, tennis, volleyball and football. The Hounds have experienced victory in many of the sports in which they compete, over the years, including in men's baseball, in which they had a record of 51 wins in 2001, they made NCAA II Tournament in five of past eight years and they went to NCAA II College World Series in 2000, as well as in women's basketball, in which they had a record of 29 wins in 2002-03 season, and three straight trips to NCAA II Tournament from 2003-2005, to name a few of their most notable achievements.
Their mascot is a greyhound named ''Ace'' and their distinctive colors are crimson and grey.
George Crowe, who played 9 years in MLB, earning a spot on the National League All-Star team in 1958, William Raspberry, a columnist for The Washington Post and a Pulitzer Prize winner, Irwin Sparkes and Alphonso Sharland, guitar front man and drummer from popular London rockband The Hoosiers, and Katie Stam, 2009 Miss America, are the notable alumni form the University of Indianapolis.
